Topic: Oh No! Sour Espresso! (4 msgs / 86 lines)
1) From: Paul Jolly
After two weeks of nearly-undrinkable cafe
cremas, I was beginning to fear the worst:
either my SL-70 needed replacing, or something
had gone wrong in my system and I'd never again
enjoy a cuppa. 8^( Then I tried a double lungo
from a local roaster and found that it, too, was
sour...which was good news in that I'd not have
to replace the Solis, but bad news in that it
suggested the latter disastrous end to my
coffee-drinking career. (Imagine--I'd have to
give away ALL of my supplies--what a Tradition
offering THAT would be!). All the while, lurking
in the background, was a slightly sore throat
that I've had for the last week or so. Then my
daughter comes down with a fever and sore throat,
and suddenly our tasty filtered tapwater is
"yucky water" to her--too sour! Ah, I think I've
discovered the problem: some virus was
interfering with my tasting. This AM, with my
throat feeling a bit better, the cafe crema
returned to its usual rich tastiness, and my
fears are all assuaged! Whew--that was a close
call!

Paul,
I've been having a similar streak, only mine is bitter...I suddenly could
not tolerate anything, coffee/non-coffee, which had the slightest
bitterness. Normally, I kind of like bitter flavors. It's getting better
now that my "cold" is leaving.
This is one of the reasons I don't chase after the elusive methods of
obtaining the "perfect" bean/brew/profile/machinery, etc... I find that
more of the taste depends on the taster(me) than on those other
details..But hey, that's only me....:-)
Ciao

Lol,
Reminds me of the time I spent 3 days tracking the "taint" in my
coffee equipment, finding nothing, and posting a plea to the
list. Ed just asked me if I had a cold.

Glad you are feeling better Paul., but to tell you the truth, that
traditions offering really had me excited.
