Topic: Twice-roasted loser?? (2 msgs / 56 lines)
1) From: Paul Jolly
Ran into a problem I've not yet encountered with
my PII today. Roasting outside as usual, in very
warm weather (72 deg) (F of course--this is
California, not Venus) and I figured the ambient
temp was high enough to roast without a way of
recycling the warm air into the popper. First
batch went just fine. The second, however, hit a
snag: the PII's fan was alternately revving
higher, then lower. I figured that the heating
element was shutting off--the machine was getting
too hot. After 8 minutes and no first crack, I
thought I'd better give it a rest.
After 10 minutes playing with my daughter (a.k.a.
roasting assistant) in the backyard, I went back
to the PII. I dumped the pale beans (Colombian
Tuluni) back into the roaster, put the box over
the machine to recycle the warm air in the hopes
of hitting the cracks quickly, and turned the rig
on. First crack after about two mintues, and
then a furious second crack only 20 seconds
later. I shut it down & poured out the beans.
Oily as the Exxon Valdez, yet no darker than a
city roast! Bizarre stuff. Aromatics would have
scored in the mid-50 range, I'm sure. I don't
particularly look forward to trying this stuff,
but I'm loathe to throw away beans. Anyone else
ever successfully pulled off a twice-roasted
batch?

Hey Paul,
Be sure that when you taste them you are where you can spit in a hurry
and have water ready to wash your mouth out with. Been there done
that, and if your experience was like mine, you will be throwing them
in the junk jar to practice your espresso tamps with. If no espresso
machine that you need to keep in practice with, hello trash can.
