Topic: My New Traveling Coffee Kit (with a twist) (2 msgs / 77 lines)
1) From: Ron L
Now that I've crossed over to the caffeinated side, and I know how fresh
coffee is SUPPOSED to taste, I've assembled a traveling coffee kit for
business trips. The last two pieces came yesterday. I am now traveling
with...
Bodum Brazil 3-tasse Press (had this for a while)
Zass Turkish Mill (just arrived from SM!)
Swissgold one cup brewer (just arrived from SM!)
I plan on bringing pre-measured beans from whatever I roasted that weekend,
vacuum sealed in individual serving bags (If I roast on Saturday, they'll
have had ~18+ hours rest for a Monday trip, and should be fine if I'm out on
Thursday or Friday).) I still need a nice bag to put it all in. The Zass
mill is about the size of a can of shaving cream, so I was thinking of a
man's shave kit bag... I'll have to go to Target and see what they have.
Of course, when the mill and brewer from SM arrived, I HAD to try it out...
I had a small amount of the Ethiopian Organic Sidamo DP that I roasted last
Sunday, so I ground it using the Zass, and made a cup into my favorite mug
using the Swissgold brewer. My wife, who generally thinks I am nuts,
especially with my coffee paraphernalia, was watching the whole process.
Once the coffee was done, I let her taste it (She drinks Starbucks Columbian
from her Bunn drip machine, but she's slowly being transitioned to my
homeroasted Columbian). She was amazed at how good the coffee was,
especially from the little one cup brewer!
Here's the twist... After tasting the coffee, she says... "Hey... That
thing would be pretty useful when I go to Florida with the Girl Scout troop
during spring break!". I guess my little obsession is so bad after all!
She wants to borrow my brewer and have me make her packages of coffee to
take on her trip! She probably won't want to use the grinder, but even
pre-ground homeroast that is vac sealed will be *MUCH* batter than the hotel
coffee or her Starbucks...

I find it fascinating how so many people's individual coffee paths cross and
converge. I'd been making pre-ground single brew vac packs for travel for
years, long before I started home roasting. A couple years ago I also got
the Zass Turkish Mill for travel and switched to small whole bean vac packs.
I still make small pre-ground vac packs and freeze them for Debi to take to
work. She previously had been grinding enough for the week and putting it in
a Tupperware container to take to work. Sitting there ground for a whole
week! I had to do something, just couldn't stand the thought of her drinking
stale coffee, and now she wouldn't let me stop making those little
pre-ground vac packs if I wanted to:-)
