First, welcome to the List!
Nope, wish I did live on The Big Island, but alas just vacation there
regularly. May be in the cards for the future... Maybe we can meet when we
return next year. (already spent 3 weeks in Hawaii this Jan/Feb)
Espresso brewing wise needing to adjust grind slightly is normal. I'm not an
expert, but know good baristas adjust their grind multiple times a day to
adjust for changes caused by humidity etc. And that's with the same roast of
the same bean. Changing roasts and or beans makes it even more needed! Take
Kona for example; a City/Light Full City roast (about 15f before 2nd) ground
@ Rocky +8 with heavy double PF (about 19gr) is perfect for my 25sec 5oz
pull plus 5oz hot water for Cafe' Crema Americano. The same Kona Vienna
mélange roasted (1/2 5f lighter, 1/2 20f darker than my "coffee brewing"
roast) ground same +8 with same heavy double PF will pull about 2.5oz! Start
with same Kona, roast different, grind the same and have one shot 200%
larger than the other!
