I started using a filter (Popfile, in my case) just because of this.
Actually, this one is blatant and easy to avoid, but many of the
commercial-type emails you receive in html format include a reference to
a 1-pixel image file that resides on a host that logs you as you
(unknowingly) retrieve that image.
One of the nice things about Popfile is that it has a "quarantine"
feature, wherein it will wrap any suspicious messages in a regular text
file, giving you the chance to examine them in text mode without
triggering any "phone home" features.
