Topic: New lever machine (15 msgs / 300 lines)
1) From: Lesley Albjerg
Dr. Crema just got his new SAMA lever machine in the mail. I just had to try it out. However, Dr. Crema and Mr Thor tamper doesn't have a 45mm tamper made for his new machine yet! The Dr. hasn't been taking very good care of himself! I pulled a very lousy first shot! Second shot was drinkable. The third shot was so poorly tamped I redefined channeling. Shots 4 and 5 made some crema, and went into two Cappos. I just halted because not only is Dr. Crema without the proper tamper, I just ran out of roasted coffee! I did get one good espresso, and now I am doing a full maintence on the machine. I am going out and turning myself an emergency tamper, and roasting some coffee before finishing Brian's Bloodwood tamper. Tomarrow morning should be a nice time to run some good shots through it.

Tsk, tsk, tsk. New machine coming and you of all people know the importance
of a good tamper! 'Fraid even being Dr. Crema won't stop you getting 50 CSA
demerits:-(
Guess it's true doctors make terrible patients! Oh no wait, another 25 CSA
demerits for running out of homeroast for the new arrival! Such a cruel way
to treat a new family member!

While, I got my tamper done. I made a Verawood tamper. Verawood is a member of the Lignum Vitae family. It doesn't need a finish, and I polished it to a very fine polish. It is hard enough that I doesn't need a base. There will be some in the Thor lineup in the fall. I just got some 65mm stock. I had enough roast left for one double shot! I think this machine has potential! It was a really good shot. Good crema, and good flavor. I don't have enough experience to say excellent yet. Now out to do some roasting. I still have some Monkey Blend left and in honor of Mike I think I will roast up some Koa Mt.

Mike I believe you are being a bit soft on Les. Les is a senior member of
the CSA. Tampers are his product of fame, and Roasting is his game.
Of all people, Les should not be without a tamper, and being without home
roasted coffee is a severe violation of CSA rules.
75 demerits is too soft. Seems like 150 would be in order, and 2 weeks
suspension.

It's the one finger tamping that's really tricky.

Sounds like an artery. Of course, as we all know, gin doesn't do
anything half-assed.

Gee Gin you didn't have to go to a strange dog; a lot of us on the list
not only bark but also bite ;-) Hey, what are friends for??
seriously; ouch, sorry.

Yep that is right! SAMA. It is made in Italy. One of my Pennsylvania tamper customers put me on to these. Nice machine, but not sold much here in the USA. Correction you must have hit an artery. A vain wouldn't shoot that far! I guess I work too much in the ER!

No, no, he get bonus points, not demerits for not having a tamper
ready. You wouldn't want him throwing any old tamper together without the
machine there. He had to wait to make sure the tamper fit perfectly into
the basket.
As for running out of coffee, demerits for running out, but it wasn't like
he had none, he ran out WITH the new machine, so there are points there,
and a wash.
Overall, he is ahead.
Congratulations Les on the new machine. I can hardly wait to see it.

Thanks for the support John. I forgot to tell the group I have been busy roasting chocolate instead of coffee! Those nibs sure are good! The tamper is made! A really nice Verawood tamper. No finish needed polished to a gloss sheen! A new experment. I am on a new learning curve and adventure!

I just pulled a couple of doubles - Monkey Blend. Excellent coffee. It will be better after at least 36 hours rest. I am glad I read the Geek on lever machines. One very cool thing about this machine is there is no noise! The only thing you hear is the wonderful coffee coming out of the spouts! Dr. Crema is back! There is still much to learn, but I am getting acceptable coffee!
