Topic: Not so bad, maybe... (14 msgs / 340 lines)
1) From: Gene Smith
After feeling pretty disadvantaged roasting with an old Melitta Aromaroast
for months, I'm beginning to think it's not so bad. After listening to all
the stuff about thermal cut-outs of one sort or another on poppers and other
hot air roasters, I realized that either Mr. Aromaroast didn't come with
one...it's inoperative...or it's set really high.
I just finished doing 4 roasts in a row with no cool down in between and it
doesn't seem to mind at all. I'm reaching 2nd crack in around 8 minutes so
I don't think it's running cool, either. And I've seen 500 degrees on the
chaff-catcher thermometer when I've fired it up in a plastic pail.
I guess my tinkertoy has some advantages after all.

Our first Aromaroast died after a few years, but we have a backup
Aromaroast, just in case our FreshRoast+ should fail. Nothing fancy, just
fresh-roasted coffee. The Tinkertoy has advantages, but the FreshRoast is a
little easier to use.
Disadvantaged? Not if you can roast coffee and get results that you like.

I roasted with an Aromaroast for years, but it was a challenge to get great
roasts. Possible, but a challenge.

You must have lucked out, Gene. My Aromaroast, and
every one I've ever heard of, will not get anywhere
near hot enough to reach second crack. Roast on!

I seem to have a 'hot' one, Andy. I got another one on ebay, virtually
unused, and it is about 50 degrees F cooler. Extreme quality variability
seems to be the bane of almost all the smaller roasters for home use.

Sorry for multiple posts. Hard drive failure and corrupted files made my
email software a bit buggy
(big understatement).
