Topic: A Plea for Germaneness! (28 msgs / 783 lines)
1) From: Michael L. Prigoff, Esq.
I hesitate to post this, being a new member of the list, as I have derived
a great deal of very useful information as I begin to explore home roasting
with my new I-Roast from Sweet Maria.
Having been a member of many listservs, however, I am shocked by the
incredible number of off-topic posts being sent to all the list
members. Personal messages about children and dogs, messages about the
weather, political commentary, clever little quips about guano whatevers,
none of them have anything to do with roasting coffee which is putatively
why people subscribe here.
I recognize that all of us probably are consuming way more caffeine than is
good for us, and that many feel a sense of community and/or friendship with
other list members. However, may I respectfully suggest that all
non-germane messages be sent as email to individual recipients and that
list postings be self-censored to those relating to roasting coffee?
Thank you (Now descending from soapbox).
BTW, anybody else have problems with the buttons on their I-Roast sticking
and/not responding when pushed? My machine is only a week old and already
I'm having problems setting my own roast profiles (other than the two presets).
Michael

I hesitate to post this, being a new member of the list, as I have derived
a great deal of very useful information as I begin to explore home roasting
with my new I-Roast from Sweet Maria. I also started to write this before
the Anonymous v. Ginny "fight" about certain illegal substances.
I came in to my office today and found 50 or so
posts, only a handful of which had anything to do with coffee.
I recognize that all of us probably are consuming way more caffeine than is
good for us, and that many feel a sense of community and/or friendship with
other list members. However, may I respectfully suggest that all
non-germane messages be sent as email to individual recipients and that
list postings be self-censored to those relating to roasting
coffee? Otherwise, the list's utility will be severely diminished, and the
"community" will be poorer for lack of their input.
Thank you (Now descending from soapbox).

If you don't want to be skipped over you might want to split out your
i-roast question in to a separte message with a different subject line so
that we can censor by subject...:-)
LOL also ironic that you should ask about the i-roast in a message titled
about Germaneness :-))

Dear Esq:
Perhaps the topic of coffee first then your general comments might be a good
idea.
Most of us try to put the ubiquitous OT in front of a REALLY NON COFFEE
issues but we be human and forget. Try delete next time or simply do not
read the posts you do not approve of...
I am amazed by how SHOCKED people are that an actual community can exist
online.
Three cheers for Maria and Tom for permitting real folks a place to discover
more about coffee and each other...

All kidding aside. The search for what is relevant is uniquely individual
and from this post it became apparent that I discover the meaning of
germane.

Your are shocked?
Since you are new, you obviously are not aware that many of these members
are pals, not only from this forum but having met in person. They share each
other's concerns, including personal tragedies and gain support from the
other members.
I would suggest that if you can't swim, don't go near the water.

Michael,
I think there are at least a few reasons why a) your suggestion is not
likely to be adopted (unless of course it comes from Tom or Maria) and
b) it might not have quite the positive influence you envision.
First of all, all lists get off topic to some extent and the amount of
off-topic conversation tolerated on a list is typically determined by
the list owner and the list's culture, which has evolved over time. In
this case, the list owner doesn't seem particularly concerned and the
culture of this list has developed into more of a neighborhood coffee
house atmosphere than a Q&A session.
Practically speaking, it's pretty much impossible to keep any list
totally on-topic all of the time. I've been on lists where almost no
deviation was allowed and lists where the level of off-topic posts was
even higher than on this one. Since you are a new subscriber and the
level of off-topic posts has been relatively high of late, it may seem
that we're totally out of control. (Well, maybe we are.) However, the
level of off-topic posts does fluctuate significantly and at times
there is actually very little chaff flying around.
It's also worth considering that many of the people who are providing
much of the "very useful information" on the list participate because
they enjoy the culture of this particular list. If the list were to
adopt a more controlled, focused culture, many of these people might,
over time, become less involved with the list and much collective
knowledge and many viewpoints might be lost.
Lastly, if you are subscribed to the digest version of the list, most
of us have found it to be somewhat frustrating to follow, to say the
least. You may find it easier to find the information you want and
ignore what you aren't interested if you set your subscription to
receive individual messages and use the appropriate features of your
mail client to filter these into a separate folder and go through them
at your leisure. This strategy makes it much easier to skip over topics
that you aren't interested in.

I should also add, for the benefit of new list members, that the only
topic know to reliably incite flame wars is partisan political
discourse. We don't get a lot of sex or religion on the list and, when
we do, no one seems to care much.

You got the wrong idea!
GERMANE is also known as Germanium hydride (GeH4), or Germanium
tetrahydride.
Furthermore, there are at least 8353 sbstances with GERMANE as the
heading parent.
AND - there are 10403 hits on 'germane', but some of these are named as
GERMOLE deriviatives. (Does a germole eat coffee cherries -
kopi germole, anyone ??)
This post was definitely totally GERMANE - but has no connection to
coffee roasting.
'scuse me while I go brew a cup of Ethiopian Harrar.
