Topic: The Presto popper revisited (19 lines)
1) From: Ken Mary
I made another roast in my Presto popper, this time no preheat and a smaller
load of beans, 75 cc or 45 grams. There was absolutely no smoke throughout the
roast, much better than the first which began to smoke heavily at the 1 minute
mark. I used a cylindrical chimney 4 inches in diameter and 8 inches high, but
still one bean managed an escape. The Mexican Altura Fino Rojas reached first
crack at 2.2 minutes, end of first at 3.0, start of second at 3.4, and end of
roast at 3.5 minutes. The mixing was still not very good as shown by the wide
difference in colors early in the roast, some still green while others turning
tan. Even at this low load, the beans at the outside were slow to fall toward
the center and re-enter the "fountain". It seems that the temperature is
governed more by the restriction of the bottom screen than the loading of beans.
Major surgery is planned for this Presto in a few weeks. Stay tuned.
