Topic: Do your drinking habits determine your bean selection? (7 msgs / 295 lines)

If you are drinking primarily espresso, cappuccinos and press pot in the =
morning would your green bean order differ from another who:
Drinks vac pot, drip. or other regular brews exclusively?

Espresso and cappuccino are the same thing, as far as method of =
decoction
goes. Press pot belongs in with the vacuum and drip category.

Having said that, beans for espresso (and anything else made with a
pressure-based extraction) are generally different than those intended =
for
extraction without pressure. There are a few beans that work ok for
single-origin espresso, but most espresso drinkers use some kind of =
mixture
of beans, some of which aren’t all that great/interesting for
vacuum/drip/press preparation.

You bet. Because I'm relatively new to roasting, I tend to go by Tom's
guidelines for what beans for what brew, and what folks on the list have
to say. Several of Tom's profiles (I forget which ones) specifically
say that he recommends a bean for a specific brew type.
So, if Tom's profile recommends a bean for espresso only, it won't get
on my order since I brew for drip. Espresso is hopefully in my future,
tho.
Bean size also affects my order. Since I'm roasting in a PII, I won't
order a bean if they're too big. Lazy dog that I am, I don't want to do
six roasts for 4 cups of coffee!

More depends on what varieties of coffee appeal to you. There are a lot of great greens that roast up to make coffee that is good brewed by any method. I personally gravitate towards African and Indonesian coffees and almost all that I have tried are great brewed by any method. (Ok, maybe Kenya doesn't make great espresso -- but it is killer in a press pot).
The SM samplers are a great way to figure out what varieties you lean towards.
Just my .02,
Edward

Ever tried Monkey Blend as drip coffee? That's a great way to use an
under-roasted batch. On the other hand, under-roasted Monkey will make a
decent Americano, especially with a bottomless portafilter in my
Silvia. As espresso, the same underroast was not acceptable.
Still learning to use my RK Drum & gas grill... 30 seconds into 2nd crack
isn't the same point of the roast as in my Hottop. But, the engineer in my
is having more fun twiddling with the gas valves.
