Topic: 1st DB/hg roast...:-((( (43 lines)

BOY!!! I sure blundered on my last roast. The beans
were poured into my 'cooled' evaseee for the night.
There was NO idea of how heat retentive it was. The
next morning, my beautiful chocolatey roast had
progressed to a vienna, black and burnt smelling.
They won't even be drunk.
So today a dog bowl was found that was 1 quart
capacity, high sided and had a half moon bottom
rather than the flat bottoms of the rest. It was
thought that it would help concentrate the heat.
Much too much was paid for it, and having been used,
it can't be returned. It seemed to be plenty big for
the green beans. It was the Australian beans this time.
However, beans kept falling out of the bowl, no matter
how gently they were stirred. Many more as the roast
progressed. They grew, as they roasted, to being within
an inch of the top, and very prone to falling out.
I have asbestos fingers, having been cooking and
baking for decades, but the beans that fell out were
$%^&*( hot toward the end of the roast.
The bowl did do a great roasting job other than that.
A google search has been done for a bigger bowl, and a
couple have been found that the companies will be
called tomorrow to get the specifics. An inside width
larger than +/- 5 1/2" is not wanted. A 'mooned' bottom
is wanted.
The roast did turn out to be a great roast.
The only down side to HG roasting down here is that
it's blinkin' hot without the heat of the gun. About 3#
of water weight must be lost during the roast. My
apartment's porch has an unrestricted westerly view.
The afternoon and evening sun beats down on us HARD!
A sun screen will be purchased when funds allow.
I'm really glad to be part of the DB/HG roasting
community.
Peace and Joy,
John
