Topic: Using a Digital Thermometer with the I-Roast? (2 msgs / 75 lines)

Has anyone come up with a way to use a Digital Thermometer such as the one
shown onhttp://www.sweetmarias.com/prod.roastkits.shtmlwith the Hearthware
I-Roast? Concerns are, getting the probe into the roasting chamber and past
the chaff colletor down to where the beans are and the temp of the roast
frying the probe.
I have seen a pic out on the SM site where Tom is using this probe with the
I-Roast but I am not sure how he got it in there.
All comments welcome.

If you are using the same type of probe that Tom is on the website, it is
very easy. You just drill 2 holes.
First, select a small drill bit that is slightly larger than the wire probe.
The goal is to create an insertion point only large enough to allow a snug
insertion of the probe
Next, select any hole on top of the I-roast (by the small screening) and
simply enlarge the hole with your drill.
Finally, repeat with one of the inner top holes on the removable chaff
collector.
After a thorough cleaning of the drilled holes, you then can insert the
probe through the two holes directly into the roasting chamber. I generally
try to position it so it will be covered by 1/2 inch of beans during
roasting.
Since the holes are only enlarged a tiny bit, the functionality is
unaffected when the probe is not inserted.
This mod works fine for me and I have noted no downsides.
Hope this helps.
