Topic: My first try (pics) (5 msgs / 169 lines)
1) From: Obrien, Haskell W.
Ok, I tried roasting my first couple batches tonight.
I used a west bend popper from the goodwill store $3.
A deep frying thermometer from walmart that was another $3.
That thing is about 11 inches long!
I drilled a hole and used the clip to keep the thermometer out of the =
beans because it interfered with the turning of the beans.
It was lots of fun, but I got complaints because I left the door open =
and the house got smelly. (I was on the deck)
I did a batch of Ugh, and then a batch of Monkey. I think I managed to =
burn the ugh a little bit, becuase I was running the machine after I =
added the thermometer to test the heat levels.
The first batch was 50 grams of ugh.
It seemed to roast in about 4:30. Isn't that too fast?
The second batch was 100 grams of monkey. I'd say 100g is the limit for =
the popper.
Any thoughts are welcome.http://starfighter.org/coffee/roastingWill

I put the monkey in a valve bag a while ago. After sitting for several =
hours, the monkey smells decent, while the ugh is stinky.
I'm sure I burnt the ugh.

4:50 is a bit fast, but not too unusually so for an
unmodified popper. The dark roasted Monkey blend is
not necessarily a bad thing. You should definately
brew it up and take it for a spin. The Ugh smells
stinky because ... well, it ain't called Ugh fer
nuthin'.

When I test roasted Ugh! in the popper I gave my son, it came out with
a strange almost chemical smell that lingered with persistence.
