Topic: Naked Portafilter (3 msgs / 53 lines)

I finally cowboyed up and drilled out my protafilter to go naked. It
was super easy. I just drilled about 15 holes in a circle on the
bottom of the protafilter and then ground down the rough edges with a
tiny barrel sand attachment on my dremel and drill. It isn't factory
perfect but it looks better than I would have guessed I could do. The
metal was very easy to drill through. It was late when I finished and
only pulled one shot with it so far. I kind of regret being so late
to jump on this wagon. It is kind of like trying to tell all my
friends about this cool new toy I got called a Rubik's Cube. Jared

Jared,
Good move. I did my first DIY crotchless with the LaPavoni it
was not difficult at all and after five shots I had the procedure tuned
in to produce great shots. With that success I went ahead and ordered
another filter and triple basket for the Silvia and have been most
happy with the triple crotchless ever since. Probably my best move
this year. Next the Silvia gets PID.

I have only pulled three shots from my new Naked portafilter but every
one has been as good or better than I was getting before the surgery.
It is so fun to watch the thick syrup of coffee starting to come out
of the filter then form into a streaked single column of foam as if it
is some kind of Hollandaise dispenser. I start making Homer Simpson
sounds each time as it starts to flow. Mmmmm Cremmma. Nectar of the
gods. I was getting a little concerned about the lack of consistently
high quality shots I was getting before the surgery. But know I am
confident I will be able to adjust my technique as needed to keep up
the quality. Thanks for all the info and support on crotchless
portafilters. (my wife hates that term for some reason) Jared
