Since I have been roasting more now, and enjoying it more, the question has come to mind '[what do I do with all this coffee?' Yup a lot of it I give away to friends. I supply for special occasions at the church, and friends get togethers, and we are drinking more now also. Do any of you sell your home roast? What do you think is a fair price? If I were roasting 180grams at a time, it would take quite a few batches to make a pound, about an hours worth of roasting. Now I can do a pound net in about 13 minutes, and it comes out better also. The specialty coffee in the super market costs about 8.90 a pound. Including the premium blends and the special season blends. My coffee is much better than Gevalia, but I have not priced theirs lately. Any ideas greatly appreciated. PeterZ Found out today that direct sunlight makes the roast go faster, here in LHC. |
I sell about 6-10 lb of coffee per month...
I sell by the pound, or half pound.
I spent a long time working out price, trying to make a pound cheaper
than two half pounds...
I was finally instructed that Starbucks costs $11ish a pound, and is
not as good.
I now sell at $10 per pound.
This is a fair price, and is easy for people to make change for... It
is also fair considering all the investment and gadgetry / tools /
experimentation / gifts which turn our hobby into a rather costly
mission.
Everybody who drinks my coffee feels it is a far better value than the
gourmet coffee found anywhere, and they are glad to pay.
I also press a morning pot and an afternoon pot at work, and share
with anyone around. They like it, and it fuels their growing habit...
Sorry for the laborious long discussion... Hope it helps.
Oh yeah, Friday night is the Wrestling Team Booster Club's Casino
Night. We are meeting at a Pizza Parlor and will have lots of beer &
wine, along with the casino games and poker... I hope it doesn't seem
disingenuous that I offered to take care of coffee. I roasted today,
and by Friday it should be very tasty. Of course I wil have cards
available there with the coffee, for ordering more, and a few $10 bags
available for take home. It was the least I could do.
You know, sometimes I feel like a modern day Johnny Coffeeseed...

Peter: Their seems to be a growingnumber who sell thweir coffee and from what I have gathered about 10.00 per pound seeems to be the norm. I have had tons if interest and since I now have more time on my hands I am going to setup at the local, like 5 blocks away, farmers market on Saturdays. This little market is like the one in Venice, CA in that they allow others "homemade" stuff not just organically and home grown. A few markets will not allow me because I do not grow the coffee. I have sold a few bags here and there because a few friends are tired of simply just being given the coffee and figure I do need to buy the greens so moe or lers insist on paying and I have charged them 10.00. The local shops charge from 12/19 a pound depending on which stale bean you buy! I have received great support from other list members along with great ideas. Please feel free to ask me any questions you want off list. Use either address below so your queries will not get lost with my list postings: thebeanbabe macdva I plan to start the farmers market by months end. I have pretty much all of my stuff except the scale for trade has not arrived yet, found a great buy and I must have one if I pack coffee there; I will be roasting on site at the market in my RK Drum. The smell alone should keep my sales up. I will also have lots if info on the only place in the world buy roasting supplies Sweet Maria's and will teach anyone who wants how to roast. Should be fun. ginny |
<Snip> Funny, Brett! The image of homespun, barefoot fruit distributor in his modern, drug dealer incarnation was way too funny! Reminded me of Tom Lehrer's 1950s update of the sentimental songe "The Old Lamplighter"...which, in Tom Lehrer's hands, became "It's the old dope peddler, spreading joy wherever he goes..." Gene, did you like my generosity in providing coffee for the drinkers at Casino night? ...spreading joy wherever he goes... Brett On Wed, 26 Jan 2005 08:05:04 -0600, Gene Smith wrote: <Snip> |
Brett... Whoever is running the Casino Night should be giving you a cut of the take for keeping the drunks awake long enough to empty their pockets. hehehe peter |
NO , well just a little, most people I know love the coffee, but will not buy it, they take all I will give them though. RK |
I got another request today from a colleague in the hallway. Told him
