Topic: The Costa's Are Coming! (45 lines)
1) From: Tom & Maria
Just wanted to let you all know that certain areas of our cofffee selection
are a bit thin right now, and for very good reason!
Kenya: The current selection of main crop Kenya AB has out-cupped even the
high-price Auction Lot samples from the new crop that have arrived to date!
I am not saying this will be a uniformally bad crop from Kenya. But there
are a lot of very mild ones arriveing that dont really bear out the Kenya
namesake in their cup character. While I feel the need to have new crop K.
in stock, as always I ignore that and wait for the sample with the REAL
Kenya cup...
Guatemala: good year for sure. But the Antiguas are not in yet so that's
why the La Tacita etc are not available. The highest grown coffees mature
slower = better development of the coffee = cup complexity and acidity. You
can't rush qualiity! The Huehue and Oriente are REALLY nice! The Oriente is
a simple but bright, refreshing, snappy cup. I love it as breakfast coffee.
The Huehue is very fruity and (while its a stupid decision in terms of
marketing ...but you know me...), I will have 2 Huehue's listed by Sunday.
They are both markedly different, distinct, and excellent. The new one, the
Catanil is really fruity!
Costa Rica: The good news: its a great year and all the Costas are on the
way now. Anything fom the new crop up to this point has been lower-grown
origins. If you have a new crop Tarrazu already, chances are theres a green
taste in the cup, or evidence of mechanical drying ...because the good
Tarrazus that are properly ripened on the tree and processed are just
arriving now. The samples have been superb. In fact, I have a Costa Rican
SWP decaf that I just cant believe is decaf! But the heart of it is 3
excellent Tarrazu: La Minita Estate (met Bill McAlprin, the owner, at the
SCAA conference), Dota Conquistador (this is a La Minita -run farm
...incredible coffee!!!! Tried to get this last year and couldn't!) and La
Pastora Tarrazu, the BEST non-laMinita Costa from last year and an
excellent cup this year with depth and really neat flavors --spice and
chocolate...
Anyway, all these arrive today I do beleive and will be listed by Sunday.
Tom
