I'm not so sure? I wonder if it was just a not-so-friendly neighbor that
did not like the noise the whining roaster makes and decided to call in
something serious enough to get the police to show up and hassle "the
offender".
I often consider the noise my HWG makes and wonder if anyone can hear it
very far away. Lucky for me the neighbor on the side of the house where I
do the roasting is very hard of hearing. But I still wonder if the ones
across the street can hear it.

Well, roasting coffee smells nothing like roasted coffee. I used to drive
out of the way to avoid a large coffee roasting plant on my way to work..It
almost made me nauseous to smell it in the morning. Of course, this was long
before I started roasting. :-)
Also, I was thinking about the use of coffee to confuse the drug-sniffing
pigs, er dogs...This could have been a rationale for the (over)reaction of
the police.
Ciao,
Angelo

I remember that I used to come into San Francisco over the Golden Gate
Bridge even though it was 11 miles longer - because the Oakland Bay Bridge
ran right over Folgers and Schillings - and the combination smells, held in
by the fog, could knock out a horse!
