Topic: New Tamper(finally) and Liquid amber (2 msgs / 46 lines)
1) From: Obrien, Haskell W.
I don't think I fully realized how important a good tamper is until I
was without for a few weeks.
The Thor Les made me arrived today, and combined with the new basket
Les(and Mike I believe) threw in, I finally pulled a couple of decent
shots with the gaggia coffee.
I roasted some Liquid Amber a few days ago, it made for some interesting
shots.
I pulled a cubano (sugar in the filter) for my wife, and a regular
double shot for myself.
It seems like the beans in the Liquid Amber make for a dryer grind.
These tend to seem grittier than when I grind Monkey blend. I almost
always have to adjust my grinder to be coarser for the LA.
Perhaps I'm over roasting the LA, I proably am since I tend to take it
to the end of second crack. I get plenty of smoke roasting the Amber.
Suggestions on how I should roast this stuff? I don't have a lot left to
play with, I only picked up a pound last time. I'm not sure that I will
order more since I'm so happy with the monkey blend.

The USPS sure took their sweet time getting the tamper to you. I am
glad it finally made it! It was Alchemist John that supplied the
Gaggia PF to make sure one of my spare doubles fit. That was the last
of the generic 58mm double baskets! I have had trouble roasting the
L.A. too. I like my own blends and the Monkey and Donkey so I don't
mess with the L.A. any more. The Puro Suro is my favorite of Tom's
blends. I am going to add 30% Uganda Bugisu next time as a
variation.
