Topic: New grinder from Kitchen Aid?? (11 msgs / 241 lines)

I saw this very retro grinder in Boarders (close to SM).  It looked 
very cool ran about $120 looked like it had decent burs but who can 
tell with out trying it out?  It's made by Kitchen Aid, and it feels 
solid.  Anyone have one, try one?  Any opinions.

I have a Capresso that isn't made anymore and it's OK but I wouldn't 
mind an upgrade.

I've seen them in a local kitchen store and eye-ball checked them out but 
never used one. They do have an interesting retro look. While I like my 
Kitchen Aid mixer, when it comes to grinders all I'll say is Rocky, Rocky, 
Rocky! (Sounds better as a chant than Mazzer, Mazzer, Mazzer:-)

Scott,
If you are seeing the one that looks like an old gas pump, leave it there ~
I bought one last spring and have not been at all pleased with it. It clogs
up and then sprays grounds out the cute little chute and the grind
adjustments are poor. I use it only when I need to grind for my press pot at
work. I have not been able to find out if the burrs are replaceable or not.
IMHO it's garage sale fodder later this summer. OR I may just fill it with
marbles and set it on my desk as an expensive paper weight / reminder!

Scott,
    I think you're referring to the Model A-9. I tried one, but didn't 
get it. Did a decent grind (but couldn't hold a candle to my Rocky). 
Problem was it was messy. Seemed to have notable problems with static as 
grounds flew everywhere. After that I looked through several reviews and 
that seemed to be a common drawback to this grinder. Does look cool, though.

I think it is worth noting that espresso-appropriateness is only mentioned 
in the copy for the more expensive one.  I don't think they felt the need 
for grinds that fine in the USA of 19and38...could be wrong.
Now I'm curious, too.  Anybody tried either of these machines?

The one I looked at was the 1938 model.  If I had $300 yo spend on a 
grinder I would be chanting too, but down here at the lower end of the 
food chain...

I'm about convinced that the thing to do is get one of those Super Jollys 
that are going for less than Rocky prices on ebay and replace the burrs. 
Of course, there is the real estate issue...(location, location, location) 
My current thought is to build a shrine to coffee grinding in the backyard, 
housed in an upturned bathtub like the Eye-talians do up around Boston 
(saving your presence, Angelo) and stick it in that.

Gino,
The half-buried bathtub is very "country". Go to Tremont Ave., in the Bronx 
and treat yourself to frontyard shrines with mosaic-covered vaulted ceilings...
Though my grandfather was a stone mason, we were spared having a shrine on 
our property. Fig trees, grape arbors and even tobacco leaves, but no 
shrines - thank god! :-)

I had one of the A-9 models. It did very well for drip and French press. =
It
came with a graduated beaker to catch the grounds in, made it easy to =
get
the same amount of ground each time. I gave it to my sister when I got =
in to
espresso. The grind wasn't consistant enough at the finests setting. If =
you
need to grind for espresso or turkish then I wouldn't recommend the A-9. =
For
drip and french press duties it worked very well. Don't know abut their
newest model.
