Hi Andy,
Sounds like you're enjoying your new machine. I see you got some other input concerning the Vienna today. Here's my take - - the timing of the shots in really a non-issue for this machine. It is preset , plus it is impossible to tell exactly when the pump begins the pull after the preinfusion, to start the timing. You can alter the volume control to make it a much shorter shot (ristretto) or the other direction for an Americano. Try
playing with that control to see what you like best. I set mine about 3 ticks up from 0. Regarding the grinder, I usually set it at 7 for most of my blends, with good results. I use my homerost now but I have also used Starbucks in it. There is some improvement in the shots using my homeroast, but not as dramatic as with my my manual machine.
BTW I also, don't like the Americano on the Vienna for regular coffee. I much prefer my vac pot and I would really recommend you talk your wife into getting a good grinder, as long she doesn't blow a fuse. I use the Solis 166 (same as Starbucks) and its great!
I think the best indicator of good settings on the Vienna is the way the "puck" looks like after its ejected- - firm round and stays in one piece is good. But ultimately the bottom line is - if it tastes good to you - go for it!
      Enjoy,
      Gary
