John,
It is suppose to be functional art!  I like what one of my British
customers said to me.   He is a University Professor and a writer. 
His thought is the tamping is the last act and physical interaction
between the person and the ground coffee.  To him it is nice to have
an object of beauty to perform that act.  I agree.  I am glad you like
your new tamper.
