Hello all,
A big thank you for all your comments on the classification names to
sounds/sights/smells. I've saved your remarks, re-examined the photos on
Tom's page and am realizing that I'm probably over roasting. The
profiles are helping me understand that +/- 30 seconds has a profound
influence on the results. Using a forward counting timer (vs. the by the
minute countdown timer on Z&D) has helped with that precision. Probably
the best advice is to roast numerous batches at different times to
spiral in on the best taste--I can't quite bring myself to do that
because I'm always so curious to find out what the next coffee tastes
like. I guess my 'different times' will be stretched out over a longer
time horizons.
Maybe when I get over my curiosity, I'll have more disclipline.
I'm catching on to the repeating lengthy stretches of time between 1st
and 2nd crack in the Z&D roaster. The pattern seems to be any where from
4 or 6 minutes or longer between cracks on 4 oz of beans. I think the
list's remarks over precision helped me catch a couple of roasts today
at the city+ mark.
And, FINALLY, I smelled the blueberries! A personal triumph! My nose
knows something--other than "oh, boy, that smells good". I graduated to
a recognized-as-described smell! Isn't there some kind of a list
ceremony for such an event? I know, I'm opening myself up to be
sprinkled with used coffee grounds.
Vicki
