Topic: Mr. Brown arrives, this is bad - VERY bad! (7 msgs / 137 lines)

Not SM this time (that be tomorrow, takes two days UPS ground:-). Was
heading out the door for the Post Office when Mr. Brown drives up. EPNW
delivery. (one day UPS ground;-) Bottomless PF with LM triple basket.
Couldn't leave for the Post Office now!
Been using about 17gr Monkey with LM double so weighed out 23gr. Ground same
as I did earlier today for a double 1oz Monkey ristretto (was very good
BTW). Fill PF, finger spin distribute grounds, modified Schomer tamp and
load. This is not good at all... Uh, it's not a channeling problem. Maybe
got lucky on my first bottomless PF triple shot but no spray, no apparent
channeling! Just oozing dripping this georgeous nectar. But not good at
all... Hmmm, as I suspected bottomless will be a bit of a challenge with
taller narrow demi's but very very little of the ooze missed. Definitely not
good in the least... Stopped the shot at 27sec. and still no noticable
blonding. Terrible, horrendous... Only about 3/4oz of the most beautiful
dark reddish brown elixir almost all crema. I've failed, I was hoping for a
1.25 to 1.5oz ristretto. All I got from this stupid bottomless PF with
triple basket was this little 3/4oz of the riches, smoothest, sweetest,
creamiest Monkey nectar I've ever tasted! (Roasted just nudging 2nd, 6 days
rest: first day rest closed mason jar no vac then vac'd, pulled at 204f)
The linger is simply unbelievable as I type.
That said I'll adjust the grind and go for a wee bit more;-)
Oh, I will still make it to the Post Office with them Kona packages!
This is bad, very very BAD!

Aside from the fineness of the grind, consider how much grind you are putting into the basket. If the 2X LM gets 17 gm, then consider 24 or 25 grams into the 3X LM which will require you to alter your technique in tamping. Fortunately, the learning curve is not steep at all for those who have significant experience with non-naked PF's. I wouldn't exactly be tempted to throw your new PF away. Basically, you will get to test your understanding of espresso and make adjustments accordingly. Consider that many others have done it and there is no reason that you shouldn't be able to join the club.

You may have misunderstood. That 3/4oz naked PF triple basket 23gr ristretto
was very very BAD as in fantabulous!

It was really as much or more wanting the triple basket for ristrettos
rather than just naked PF for shot training that pushed me over the edge. I
considered, and may still get, the LM PF with single spout that holds triple
basket (without PF going naked.)
Homemade chocolate wise, too slippery a slope to embark on right now. I'm
still trying to get good at coffee!
