What is the best way to obtain a naked PF for my Gaggia "Coffee"? I'm aware=

of one source for modifying one of my PFs (for about $25) - is that the bes=
t
way? Doing it myself is not an option.

I know that this is a thread that has been around a long time, but can
someone please explain what a "crotchless" portafilter is and why one would want
such a thing?

Thanks

Michael,
You cut the bottom out of the portafilter so that the bottom of
the filter is visible when you are pulling a shot. The main reason
to do it is so you can detect channeling in the puck, shows itself as
a sharp stream of espresso shooting out some random direction, and
get the grind, distribution, and tamp right. It is also a lot easier
to keep the portafilter clean after a crotchectomy. A third benefit
is the shot flow is quite beautiful and you get to see it.
