I just joined the list a few days back and have been lurking since then.
Figured I would post a quick intro... The ironic thing is that I am in
Iraq - Camp Fallujah to be exact with the II Marine Expeditionary Force,
surrounded by very, very bad coffee... It kills me to read about all the
good coffee you all are roasting and drinking!
I have been sliding down the coffee slope since about March of 2003.
My wife and I have been enjoying different coffee, first from the
supermarket, the JR's (Mayorga and Monticristo) to Bucks County as our
latest favorite - they roast and send out very quickly - and I have
grown to love the fresh roasted MUCH more then anything else - as you
all know! We also have a roaster we visit on the way to the Shenandoah
mountains - where I go to fish and relax when I am home (we live in
Fredericksburg, VA, I am normally stationed at Marine Corps Base
Quantico.)
So anyway, out of curiosity I started searching on Home Roasting out
here during some downtime and ran into the Sweet Marias page... Now I
can't wait to get home and try this out! I figure to start slowly; my
wife is trying to find a Poppery for me to tear apart when I get
home...in Feb I hope!? But I love new toys, and figure I will have an
IRoast or something similar soon after...
Anyway, thanks for the great information, I will be bothering you from
time to time when I finally get back home to my family and good coffee!
Oh well, back to lurking - just wanted to say hi.
Take care

WOW - that would be great! This will knock some of these guys off their
feet... They are all drinking Chock Full o Nuts and raving about that.

I passed on even drinking coffee until I had ordered some Mayorga and
Monticristo from JR - and after my Bucks County at home, it was pretty
bad.

Thank you!

I have been using a very scientific method - two lids on the grinder

You really shouldn't be! Even with all the stuff that flies back and
forth between one side and the other here, the one thing that holds
true is that the American people are behind the soldiers on the
ground 100%. When we get a chance to help out, we're very happy to do
it.
Do you think there's a way of building a little network of home
roasters and various companies over on your side so that more of us
can help out more of you? It seems to me that the number of people
willing to help you out will end up giving you more coffee than you
can use. How can we send some to other coffee lovers over there, and
maybe in Afghanistan, who would appreciate something other than Army
coffee?

Believe me - if you send coffee it will be consumed!
Most of the Marines here LIVE on coffee... My boss drinks his Chock
Full o Nuts until 9:30 (2130) at night! I had a Gunnery Sergeant
(Gunny) on a deployment years back who drank 20-25 cups of coffee a DAY.
We work some pretty long hours 16-18 hours a day, 7 days a week...so it
helps to have caffeine in your blood.
I am here until Feb - it takes two weeks to get a package here, if you
send it, I will distribute it.
My other vice is cigars - and I have been the point man for Uncle Mickey
aka Mr. Bundles to distribute cigars around the MEF HQ. I also
coordinated with the MEF Chaplain and provided the Chaplains address so
we can get cigars to the Marines kicking in the doors - the ones that
REALLY deserve the attention of you'll back home...so if you get coffee
here, it will be distributed - my promise.
I am willing to do whatever I can to make life a little better for the
servicemen and women here. Some of us are on 2nd or 3rd deployments
(this is my 2nd since 2004) - so we appreciate it. Also with the
holidays coming, it will brighten the days a bit.
Of course, it will ruin them for normal coffee for the rest of their
lives!

Sean,
Question. Do you know if there are any particualr origins you really like or
are the coffees you'd been getting from Bucks County blends? (Moot point
this shipment since a couple half pounders to the Post Office already:-)
BTW, you may find that as much as you liked Bucks County over JR you may
find the various home roasts coming your way of the absolute best of the
best Specialty coffee greens available (from Tom) may "taint" your pallet
for life! Even if it takes two weeks to get to you it should still be very
good, not absolute peak flavor but not over the hill totally stale yet, just
on the downward slope.

I love the Marine Corps; I love the Marine Corps...
So I found out this morning that I was going to Baghdad, was told to
pack for Baghdad, get there ASAP... So I pack, hit the post office,
drop off my laundry to get washed - all the stuff I needed to do before
I punch out Sunday.
About an hour ago, my bosses boss a Colonel sticks his head in and says,
"I heard you got another reprieve" (I have been told 3 times now I am
going and then not)...
So I am in a holding pattern. If you sent coffee, it will make it to me
- if you didn't... I would wait - I should know soon where I am in fact
going to be... Thanks for all of you who are doing this, sorry for the
confusion!
Unfortunately this is all too common.

Sounds like you've got the 'wait' part down but you *might* need to tweak
your 'hurry up' just a touch.
While you're waiting you might be able to find a 'permanent' address we can
ship coffee to that will get at least some of it distributed out and about.
Last year I used the 'AnySoldier' network to send over a couple of care
packages to units out in the wilderness. Each had a couple of pounds of
roasted coffee, a small grinder, a small drip coffee maker, instructions, a
1/4 lb of green coffee in case they wanted to try roasting their own, a few
phone cards, and as much candy as I could fit in the box. The only real
expense was the grinder - even those cheap camping ones run about $20.
Hmmm... I just got an account with a place that carries outdoor stuff as
well as the other things I signed up for. If they have grinders then I can
get them at wholesale....
Enjoy!
