"The worst home-roasted coffee is better than the best commercially roasted
stuff."
(Should be a bumper sticker.)
Now maybe that's not objectively demonstrable, but most of us enjoy the
process so much, and take so much pride in what we do, that even the odd
"bad" batches are okay and very satisfying. I've never tossed out a "bad"
batch.
But I'm also not spoiled for other types of coffee - another of your
apparent worries. If I'm someplace where all they serve is instant coffee,
I'll drink it, if I really want the coffee or caffeine. It's a different
drink. Restaurant coffee is generally a far cry from what I can do at
home, but heck, when I'm out I drink it. A lot of this is personal
choice. Drinking other "coffees" only reinforces the satisfaction I get
from roasting my own.

Rob, you're obviously a nearly obsessive perfectionist. I can say this
because I am too in many things.
  :-)
If it's going to bug you that much, maybe home roasting isn't for you. On
the other hand, stop worrying about "seconds". I sure don't. It's all
good, and the best part of this hobby is you can take it to whatever level
is right for you. There is no "perfect" roast that you MUST achieve,
except the roast that YOU like. I toss in the beans, crank my stovetop
corn popper for about 10 minutes, and voila. Pretty damn decent
coffee. It may not be up to the standards of some other people on this
list, but I don't care and they don't care. It's great for me, and THAT's
what this is all about.
We can intellectualize about this ad nauseum, but really - just try it (the
cost of entry is low)... or not, if you're still too ambivalent at this
point. But for heaven's sake - and for your own - don't agonize over
it. This should be a fun, enthusiastic hobby, never a drudge, never a
chore, never a grind. (Oh wait...)
