Topic: OK, that was really cool! (33 lines)

With all the popper talk lately, I decided to try it. This is a serious
learning experience!
I got into roasting originally without the benefit of this list. So
read the basics, decided it was easy and bought a Alpinrost because of
the batch size. From day one I have been roasting by ear alone
withought the benefit of seeing what was going on. Watching a bean go
crack and seeing the chaff fly off and come out is about the coolest
thing I have ever seen.
Unfortunately, I just lost a lot of respect for my Alp. In the Alp,
first crack goes on for about a minute and a half and then second crack
goes on for 2-3 minutes if I let it. And first and second just kind of
meld into one another. I can think of a few times I have heard the
first snap of second only to hear the finishing snap of first right
after it. Maybe this is attributed to the drum turning too slow? In
the popper, first and second were really distinct phases. It was almost
2 minutes between end of first and beginning of second (its only an
1100watt popper). And I watched 3 beans snap on my cooling table before
I turned on my fan.
This was one of those horrible moments when you catch a glimpse of
exactly how much you DON'T KNOW.
