New Burrs and Vac Pot
Just wanted to pass along the importance of changing burrs in your grinder.
I have a Solis M Plus which I initially used for espresso, but then quickly
moved to a Rocky.  The Solis has been my drip grinder ever since and done a
fine job.  Recently I began to notice that my vac pot were cloudy (Bodum
with cory rod) were getting cloudy and that the final bubble up flourish was
greatly diminished.  I ordered a new upper burr for the Solis and tried it
today with stunning results.  Wonderful coffee, tremendous final flourish,
and clear as a bell.  
If I were starting over I would probably have bought the Rocky for drip and
a Mazzer for espresso, but am happy enough with the Solis M+ for drip - and
am glad I spent $18.00 to bring it back to life.  
Thought I'd pass along the experience if things for you are slowly starting
to degrade.

First let me say I have no doubt replacing just the upper burr improved the
grind quality. But I also have no doubt it's not grinding as good as it
could or should. But yup really. The lower burr, or auger as some may call
it, is part of the bean cutting/shaving equation. Check some place that
works on and sells a machines and grinders and sells replacement burrs for
commercial grinders. (Won't give URL since they sell stuff Tom also sells)
You'll notice for instance all are sold in sets, including Rossi Conical
burrs and the what you're calling an auger. If only replacing one half of
the burr set part of the "grind" will be nicely shaved while part will be
more crushed from the dull side.
As far as burrs visually appearing ok that means about nothing. We're
talking about optimally very sharp cutting edges. They may look fine to the
eye but if running your finger along a cutting edge of the burr with
moderate pressure doesn't draw blood they're dull!-)

In the SMP, the lower burr is case hardened. It will easily outlast a
handful of the upper rings, which were not case hardened.
Baratza had some palaver about the burrs being matched. True, if you tried
to swap one with the exhaust cam on an XK Jag engine. No match.
At the gravel setting, the SMP had enough fines to give good body to a pres=
s
brew. I liked that.

Just imagine- what do you think they will say? You already know what you'll

If: "some place that works on and sells a machines and grinders and sells
replacement burrs for
commercial grinders" speaks and can carry on a meaningful conversation
instead of just looking up a scripted answer, congratulations!
Take your grinder in, with a few ounces of beans.
Set the grinder to Gravel, where it first turns on, and grind an ounce.
Inspect the grind with your 10X loupe.
Notice the preponderance of coffee dust, in addition to the very coarse
grounds.
This dust is produced by the poorly cut upper ring burr. The burr is cut
with a dull cutter, which leaves sharp burrs on the burr itself. These
scratch the beans and create the dust.
Coffee dust extracts instantly, then overextracts while the coarse grounds
are just starting to extract. What a flavor combination.
The Solis conical burrs are a neat 2-stage design that's obvious when you
inspect the upper burr. The first stage is very coarse, and works with the
coarse auger stage to feed the finer 2nd step of the burrs.
Solis' newest grinder has cast zinc bolted on at the top and the base, and
the motor's about 5X as powerful, too. Interesting- I wonder how many of th=
e
Scheiss Meisters got sold before consumer resistance built up.
I guess the bottom line is- what's in the cup? I liked the 8-second
ristrettos when I set the SMP to 2 steps coarser than Drip. 3 steps below
Drip, the burrs clashed, so no 40 grind settings! Only 8 were useful.
Below the 8 steps, I got clumping coffee paste that wouldn't clear the
grinder. The step above the 8 is where you remove the bean hopper and it
won't run.
The new homes seem happy enough with the SMP and the Bodum Antigua, so I
must be the Nit-Picker. Fancy that!
