Good evening-
I'm probably the last one to chime in with cupping results, but what the
heck. Arron B. and I swapped djampit. His roasted beans arrived yesterday. =
I
immediately poured some out into a cake pan and took a huge sniff. They
looked to be just a tad past FC to a FC+ or so. They had a very striking
nose. They smell sort of sharp, but not overpowering. For comparison's sake=
,
I poured the djampit I roasted to FC+ on the 17th into a pan and took a
sniff of that. Whatever it was that created that sharp smell was even
stronger in the batch I roasted. I would call it sharp and spicy with some
earthiness and a bit of cocoa (milder than chocolate). Arron's beans had a
bit more chocolate and maybe some background vanilla. That was last night. =
I
wanted to cup them right then, but there was dinner to find, and there was =
a
hockey game to watch.
I was going to make dueling drip cups this morning, but somehow managed to
turn the alarm off without waking up. Hate it when that happens. Puts a
crimp into my whole morning. So much for Plan A.
Tonight, I had the house to myself and cupped the two djampits. I ground 9
gms of each in the Rocky at about 13, which is pretty fine, but not too
fine. Half a cup of 200+/- degree water and I was ready. From the ground
coffee I got more chocolate from Arron's beans that I did from mine. The
sharp spicy smell was still there too. I poured the water and let them sit
for 3 minutes. Arron's had a very earthy musty sort of smell. There was
something else there that for all the world smelled like what comes out of
the jar of dry black-eyed peas when you first open the jar. I knew the
smell, but that's the best analogy I could come up with. Mine had a touch
more spice (cinnamon?). Arron's tasted a tad more acidic than mine but not
by much. Both were very full in flavor with the As they cooled, the flavors
got fuller and more complex. At no time did the acidity develop beyond a
bare hint.
Overall they are both very very similar. I guess this would be expected fro=
m
two hot air roasters (my I-roast, Arron's popper). I'll brew some up for
drinking in the morning and report any further details if there are any.
Will- Thanks for such a cool exchange. This was fun.
