jeez you people are really bad for me, i have been reading and reading and
reading, Internet sites, books, magazines, i just recently got my first rea=
espresso machine, and i already want to upgrade, i want a Brewtus, or
an Andreja
Premium, or Vivaldi S1or maybe a Livia 90 semi auto. Jeez i cant even come
close to affording one of those!!!!!
Is the Rancillio Silvia the closest thing to them in its price range, when =
upgrade i want to do it considerably, not just a small step, is the Silvia
really a semi pro model, will it make continuous shots, and does it make
real micro foam for pouring latte art??
thanks for ruining my enjoyment of coffee ;)
p.s. my wife and friends thought i was crazy before, they think i am really
nuts now (and i am!!!)

No. Not a "prosumer" like the HX machines, but a very high-end home-
only machine.
Yes, but.....
Eventually the boiler will need refilling since it does not have auto-
fill, and temps will drop. I was able to get two pair of shots at a
time without having to refill the boiler (via the steamwand and brew
switch) before either temp-surfing or boiler refilling.
Oh, yes. Relatively slow steaming, which with a thermometer gives
pinpoint control for silky microfoam. But not right after or right
before pulling a shot--gotta wait in either case.

With or without the PID mod?
You get no sympathy from me, I was once happy with my Mr. Coffee
"pump model" espresso machine, now I'm struggling to decide between a
Brewtus II and a Vivaldi S1. What i really want is a few features
from each of them.
Silvia does seem like a cool machine if you like to "hot rod" things.
Good luck!

If PID'd no need to surf and keep filling reservoir. With PID a real good

Quoting Woody DeCasere :
I've had the Silvia since last August, and I PIDded it about 2 months
after I bought it.
With PID, it makes great espresso, and if you have the patience to wait
2 minutes after you pull the shot, fantastic steam power. (Oh, do the
pressure adjustment first, though. Then naked portafilter. Then PID.)
Yet ... I find myself wanting to upgrade to an HX. The steam thing is a
bit annoying, but that's only a once-a-day problem for me, and I don't
entertain coffee lovers often, but mostly I'd like to have a machine
that has the stability for back-to-back shots. I suspect the quality of
my espressos and cappas won't improve all that much with an HX. (I'm
just beginning to get into blending coffee, and it takes a lot of
So, I might have a PIDded Silvia for sale shortly if I can find a good
deal on an HX. The Silvia is such a popular machine that (apparently)
you can get most of your money back for it when you decide to upgrade
later. That is what I am hoping for :)
I don't remember what grinder you have. A good grinder is more
important than deciding between a Silvia and a GS3.

Look for a used one of these, (not the auto like also listed)http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-FAEMA-C85-Compact-S-1-1-Group-Espresso-Machine-NR_W0QQitemZ7589973814QQcategoryZ53187QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemIn unknown condition (like all on ebay) about $500. I have two, it just
fits under the kitchen counter. Don't get the auto, if the electonics go
you are in trouble.

Not correct. While pulling a shot with a single boiler machine like Silvia
the boiler is drawing water in at about the same rate is is pushing it out
for the shot. Re-filling boiler issue only occurs when steaming which does
not draw water into the boiler.
