I had a friend over tonight so we could play coffee. He brought his
beans and Poppery, I had my beans and my poppaire II.
What we did was work to refine load size and roast length. My friend
is new to roasting since I started him on it last October.
Started with Guatemala Huehuetenango
First he loaded and ran 1/2 c beans - never got hot enough, roasted to
a city roast.
Then we loaded and ran about 1.25 c beans - roasted to a Vienna.
We then cooled them, and pulled some cafe cremas, to sip and compare.
They were both ok, the lighter having much more fruity tastes, and
the darker having a simpler sweeter taste.
Then we switched to some Sumatra just to try small and larger loads -
same experience.
Then we switched to some Brazil Yellow something or other. WAS NOT
FROM SWEET MARIAS. Boy is that the truth.
Smelled foul on the small load. Roasted to a City +
Smelled foul on the larger load. Roasted to a Vienna
tasted as foul as it roasted.
I redcommended he conduct roast tests with it - but if it were me I'd
toss them all.
So we finished with some Kona Purple Mountain Extra Fancy '05
Small load, added a few beans and made Full City
Larger Load, went to Full City Plus
Great nose, greata body great taste - both.
I sent all the roasted beans home with him.
He left me a lb of Monsooned Malabar... Miss Silvia will like it....
Gave me time to think about computer languages, and young
professionals in the service business, and the real roots of
contemporary beverage vendors. AND Grinders...
I didn't want to think up any new trivia questions, cause it keeps
costing me beans...
Regards,
Brett Mason
