My wife and I went to Old Mesilla, New Mexico yesterday. You can see
their own web site here:http://www.oldmesilla.org/.
Very nice place. Imagine my surprise when the smell of roasting
coffee hits me. At first I don't pay attention to it you know?
Because I'm so used to smelling it at the house. But then it kicks in
that I normally don't smell it other places and I follow my nose to
this little cafe. The guy operating the roaster called it his "baby
roaster," but it looked as though he could roast a couple pounds in
there. He had a 2 quart pitcher that was about half full, and he
poured it all into the drum. It was gas operated and had a pulley
that turned the drum. I guess when you compare it to the huge ones
that Tom has, it is a baby one.
When I told this guy that I roasted my own, he started showing me his
roasted beans and offering me samples. His french roast was very
smooth. He called it Body of Death or something like that! I got a
pretty big kick out of it.
The worst thing about it is that my wife had my camera the whole time
and I had been taking pictures of some of the different places. I
wish I could say that I ran out of film, but heck, who has film
camera's these days? Not me. I just totally forgot that I had it with
me. The conversation was good. Next time I go there I'll have to be
sure to take some pictures.
