One believes that the English also have the perfect Descriptive Term for
these sorts of behavior:
"Barking Mad ...."
OTOH, all this does rather re-define the term 'Pro-bat' - although I'm not
yet aware of any 'Anti-bats' out there yet.
Even further off-topic - one of the saddest sights I ever saw was at the old
Bell Lab's Murray Hill Lab. Some benighted Grad student had conceived the
brilliant idea of feeding LSD (well, this was 1969 ...) to some common Brown
Bats and then blithely throwing them into the facilities' large Anechoic
Chamber.
The room was briefly full of frantically fluttering bats, zooming hither and
yon in frantic patterns, crashing into the walls and falling from the
ceiling, until a few minutes later, all of the bats ended up in a sort of
quivering mass on the floor.
Every few seconds, a rather bedraggled-looking head would emerge from the
bat-puddle and we'd hear a rather hysterical 'Meep? - Meeep? - MeeeeeP?'
come from the down-converter's speaker as one of them tried to echo-locate
something, anything ....
It must have been the Bat's version of Hell - or at least Suburban Life -
and has always stayed with me as a classic example of needless suffering in
the name of Science.
Cheers
Jim
