I was in Chicago for a work meeting yesterday, and wanted to stop into
Intelligentsia. But, darn it, the one in the Loop closes at 5:30.
What's with downtown Chicago, anyway? Why does it roll up the
sidewalks so early?

The evening was already designated for a birthday party pub crawl. We
managed two: started at the Map Room and then walked down to Cans,
from which we were ejected at 2 (AM). This following a full-press
Greek dinner for 90+ people at the Parthenon (3 blocks from our
hotel).

Denver town does it too, except for sporting events, Larimer Square and
Lodo. They'e usually jumpin'. After 1500, the freeways aren't very. I-25
(Cirque du Rollover) is entertaining radio.
In Chi town, the thing to avoid is the Dan Ryan. When it was being built,
I'd head up 66 to visit an uncle in Morgan Park on S. Longwood Dr. Later,
the worst insult you could hurl was- "I wish you early transmission failure
on the Dan Ryan at rush hour."
The earthmovers wiped out a lot of ethnic neighborhoods and who knows how
many little coffee shops? None near "Vote early and vote often," I'm sure.
Over forty years ago,The Palomar at Pontiac was a neat diner, and the folks

Hello! That was the only coffee I ever liked.
I had a diner on my morning paper route but Art's coffee was Scattah to me.
I still got his paper to him by 0430. The coffee smelled wonderful brewing,
but lost it between the pot and the cup somehow.

Dude. You went to the Jackson Street one? Their premier Millennium Park

It's a shame you missed their extremely cool new store. ;-)

Hey now!!
I grew up in chicago.... Im FROM chicago.....
from...as in, not there anymore, hopefully never have to return.... the
city and the state has totally gone down the toilet in the last 20
years... Chicago is it's own worst enemy and desserves whatever rotten
reputation it grows upon itself. kind of like a cancerous mole.
Let's tear down comisky park, a perfectly good baseball field, because
some filthy @#$%#$%^ c #%#$%^ @#%#$ wanted a new stadium.... Used to
be a great city... you are not missing much anymore.
If you are looking for fun, leave the state of Illinois all together and
goto wisconsin, or indiana... just to name a few.

Sandy, you say there is a massive construction project going on on the
dan ryan... ok back in 1979 there was a massive construction project
going on on the dan ryan.
when is there not a 'project' going on to keep the corrupt unions fed
with millions of taxpayers dollars in chicago?
sadly the traffic has bloated out into most of the burbs as well and
travel has become a chore at the very best anywhere near chicago.

Problem is that obsolescence is built into highway projects--the
roadbed matrix is extremely shallow compared to the European
standard, thus ensuring the necessity for periodic resurfacing and
lining the coffers of politically-connected construction firms (the
unions have much less to do with it these days, and their influence
is dwindling across the board as company after company successfully
engages in union-busting). And the last Damned Ryan construction
project was in the 1990s.

That's great news Aaron, I'm going to Wisconsin!
I'll be in Neena (near Appleton) for a week starting the 11th. So, where do
I go for coffee? What else is there to do?
It's a work trip, but I will have some free time.

New Moon Coffeehouse in Oshkosh--they also have live entertainment.
Green Bay has a coffeehouse downtown (forget the name). No live
music, but they serve Alterra coffees. If you find yourself up in
Marinette over the weekend, there is Downtown Grounds on Hwy. 41 (if
the owners are at the controls of the machine, you'll get decent
espresso).
