I purchased the i-roast, and 10 pounds of the Panama 1800 meters. What =
I really need now is a burr grinder since. Zass's aren't available so =
should I purchase the giant Tosser as my only burr grinder? Just =
wondering. Thanks to all for the help.

Depends on your needs. It can be tiresome hand grinding. For the price of the
Tosser one can get a cheap electric burr grinder. However, if you expect to
get into espresso figure on a Rocky at least. The Tosser might be able to do
for espresso.It's your call

Dave:
Nice startup kit!
As to the Trosser, it depends on what you want it for. Never having been
exposed to espresso, I was surprised to learn from the list how
micron-critical the grind is. I lived for over 20 years in a cabin with no
electricity, so I used an old Spong "burr" grinder (More of a crusher,
really. Tom referred to it once as a "mortar and pestle") but I had always
filtered my coffee so it didn't matter. I used that "grinder" for over 20
years. I got to like the ritual, the process of making my morning cup by
hand, even after I moved to civilization, til I finally got lazy and bought
a Solis Maestro.
Even the Maestro, as slick as I thought it was at the time, would be a poor
grinder for espresso. Nobody seems to know yet whether the giant Trosser
will adjust fine enough for espresso, but when I hear the guys talk about
"tenths of clicks" affecting their shots, I would think that it would be a
pain to try to adjust any hand machine that accurately. They're just not
designed for micrometer precision.
For FP, or drip or vac pot, I think it would be dandy. Plus, it just has
that German no-nonsense functionality, that "Industrial Era" thing going in
spades!
If you hit the ground running in the morning, and need to get your fix
expeditiously, having naught but a hand grinder may get tiresome. But if
you make time to smell the coffee, I heartily recommend it. I still mash
beans with the Spong occasionally.
