Both definitions are technically correct.
Interaction of an acid with a base, and dissolving a metal into an acid
will produce a salt.http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&defl=en&q=define:salt&sa=X&oi=glossary_definition&ct=titleI remember a trick I used to do way back when... Id take lye, dissolve
aluminum into it, let everyone see it bubbling and fizzing like mad. Id
do the same with acid. let em watch it fizz away at it and eat it.
Id then mix the acid with the base and drink the liquid.... it would
neutralize into nothing more than salt water. The looks on folks faces
was priceless. (Warning: Do NOT try this at home boys and girls, you
have to mix them in EXACT proportions or you will end up in big trouble
if you ingest it).
One thing to keep in mind though is that many salts are very toxic to
the human body. a mere 2 grams of copper salts will kill a person. If
you are going to play around, be very careful what you make.
