I like the FS but don't like the bulk of the machine.
I just noticed on the FS website, they have a Mr.
Coffee coffe saver set. It contains a handheld device
to vac the container. It also works on all products
made by FS. This might be a good option for those
with limited kitchen space. Not a bad price either (35).

Maureen,
Interesting, thanks for the post. I am sure you will get tons of responses.

Just to clarify, it may work for all FS products that use the FS hose
adapter, but does not work for FS primary intended function: FS triple ply
freezer/nuker/boiling water vac bags.
I agree FS takes some counter space. When we first got ours a decade+ ago we
intially kept it in a drawer. Initially our primary intended usage was for
better freezer storage of bulk purchase then per meal package freezing meat.
FS vac bagging does an excellent job virtually eliminating 100% freezer burn
with much longer freezer storage possible. Beef a couple years. Far far
superior to double freezer paper wrapping. And FS way easier than water
block freezing fish to eliminate freezer burn! After using it for vac
bagging cheese and other items we found it needed a permanent always
accessible counter space of it's own. BTW, we have not had a cheese go moldy
in many many years. (excepting bleu etc. that came that way:-) Countless
useless for prolonged food storage even things like s'getti sauce and
gravies. Freeze first then vac bag. For instance we do gravy in muffin pans,
then make little single "gravy muffin" vac bags, just right for two servings
on mashed taters weeks & months later. We're still periodically having 48hr
apple cider brined cherry wood smoke roasted turkey and gravy from 'dem
drippings any time we want, 1/2hr from the freezer! (Did a second turkey a
couple days after Tday just to FoodSaver stock freezer, not nearly enough
leftover!-) And since food lasts longer there's less waste which really
equals cost savings in the long run.
For many years our FS has been the most often used appliance in the house.
Many times a day every time. Used more often than even my Bricoletta! ('cuz
FS used to re-vac mason jar-o-beans every time the Bric' is used)
OTH that small hand held would be great for travel, taking less space than
our decade old original FS now in our travel coffee bag to re-seal jars. (we
upgraded to the Pro II model 5 or so years ago)

Mike, how nice to see your relpy:
Thanks for the espitle.
I must say that Maureen was perhaps thinking of simple coffee beans, flour or other rather quick freeze items when she mentioned the new "pencil" vac item from food saver.
I don't think she was talking about using the auto aux lighter for vac sealing a 450 pound dressed deer out in the woods.
have a nice 4th

You're welcome. Though I'd called it a commercial not an epistle, since I'm
a FS shill not a FS Apostle:-)

True, but IIRC beards also part of mandatory Apostle facial wear (or is it
hair.) So maybe just an acolyte shill.

Come now Mike, don't be coy. Do you like the FS or not?
So last night I undertook a major project and bagged my greens. I have to
say my storage drawer looks really cool now (not that it looked bad
before.) Took 2 1/2 11" rolls for the 5 lbers + 1 8" roll for the single
pounders.
Sorry to stray into coffee territory Brett. :)

For folks in Western Canada, London Drugs sells the VacuVin. A set with
two canisters, the plunger, and some coffee costs $24.95 CAD.
