Topic: Going rotary... some questions (4 msgs / 128 lines)
1) From: Obrien, Haskell W.
Well, my ulka pump in my giotto was a bit damaged recently (don't ask)
I'm finally doing the procon upgrade. I know I need to buy a fitting, =
per previous conversations.
I also need to pick up a pf pressure gauge. Any reccomendations? These =
sorts of things vary in quality IMHO.
Anything else I should know?
I'll probably do the giant resevoir method, but have yet to do the math =
on pressure to the pump vs off the water line. I rent, so I'd prefer a =
resevoir.

"Any reccomendations?"
Just two recommendations, since I have never done a mod to an espresso
machine. I'm really not sure how I'd tune one in the first place, but for
the mechanics of the pumps and plumbing, it's pretty straightforward.
You will want to seal the male pipe threads with Teflon tape for a couple of
layers. Pipe threads are tapered. Do Not put the tape anywhere except male
pipe threads.
These are not vacuum cleaner pumps. They need to be "charged," or kept in
prime all the time they're spinning. They can pump maybe 150 psi, but the
intake should never be above the water level in the reservoir.
Water must flow easily into the pump intake. No small diameter tubing or
sharp bends or flexible tubing that can kink. Supply has to exceed demand or
you could cavitate the pump and wreck it.

An E61 is somewhere on the event horizon- I hope

I'd suggest asking the question on the Home-barista.com forum. I know there
are a number of people there that have done vibe to rotary conversions.

Will,

I am not familiar with the Giotto. I did a rotary Procon upgrade to
my Astoria a while back, it was a fairly straight forward
modification. I also upgraded to a duplex pressure gauge that is, for
me, preferrable to having to use a PF pressure gauge - a little more
sweat equity but about the same or slightly less cost.
I can attempt to answer any questions about the modifications you may
have. Contact me off-list.
