Topic: Colombian Mesa de los Santos / Peru notes (46 lines)
1) From: Tom & Maria - Sweet Maria's Coffee
Bucaramanga (the Mesa de los Santos region) is really out of season
now, so you shouldn't really look for more now (which is why we are
out!) Right now we are just beginning to see samples for southern
Colombias like Narino - in fact we have new crop Reserva del Patron
arriving immanently. So that is where its at with Colombia.
On the subject of South America, I am headed off to Peru to their
first ever cupping competition (and actually my first time ever as a
head judge). It's not a full fledged competition, because really Peru
is not ready for that, but it should be very interesting. In
combination with that, I am going to be traveling the Cuzco area to
visit some very small farming groups (meaning that the entire coop
produces less than 10 bags a year!) to look for some coffees with
great potential. I have been frustrated with Peru for a long time ...
not because we can't find a good coffee, but because the potential
there is for fantastic coffee. The problem is a very screwed up
coffee trade, with a lot of corruption at the bigger coops. And (as
you see from my into comments on our Peru page) a very insidious
implementation of Organic coffee production. Anyway, I have been
without an opportunity to get myself to Peru, cup, and try to do more
for both the farmers AND for greater cup quality. But I ran into this
guy, K.C. Okeefe, who lives in Peru and who is actually the same
fella that Intelligentsia is working with in the New York Times
article about Nicaragua. Basically he is completely on the same page
as I am (match cup quality to price premiums for farmers as a win/win
model for both coffee producers and coffee enthusiasts). So look
forward to some better Peru information, and hopefully more
outstanding Peru offerings come December/Jan.
