Dennis and Marjorie visited tonite and we did a little tasting. First
we did a comparison brew with the Chemex and a Cory vac pot using some
Mexico FTO Chiapas Special Lot. Surprisingly the vac pot coffee tasted
better. Both were good (actually, better than good), but the vac pot was
just a little nicer. This surprised me since we had a partial stall
with the vac pot and the Chemex has always been my favorite method of
brewing and the one that I usually show off with. I generally don't
care that much for the vac pot brews, but this one was nice.
After the brew test, I did a quick 1 lb roast in the RK for a friend
that wanted some homeroast. Then on to the main event - espresso
tasting. I had some 10 day rested Greenstripe. It was nice, but
nothing special. It was pretty nice 5 days ago. We went on to try
shots of the Chiapas, Brazil Yellow Bourbon, Monkey Blend, and Harar Lot
30. The Monkey Blend beat out all of the SO shots. Tom blends some
goooood sh*t!
Now for the raspberry surprise. As I opened each of the vac sealed jars
of beans, I passed them around for everyone to smell. The Monkey Blend
had an overwhelming smell of raspberries. Kinda like those chocolate
covered raspberries. I swear the jar was clean. In fact it is a jar
that has only been used for coffee for about the last six months. There
was no raspberry taste in the shots, but the beans in the jar smelled
more like raspberry than roasted Lot 30 smells like blueberry. Has
anyone else encountered this?

I'll bring some to the gathering. I can't guarantee raspberry; I've
never noticed it before.

The Flavor was incredible By far the best shot of the night!! It wasn't
too bright and had a smoothness that I really enjoyed! Thanks Jerry for
a wonderful time and tons of awesome coffee!
Back to the raspberries... it was very noticeable and quite sweet
smelling Is the monkey blend a "trade secret"? or do we actually know
what is in this wonderful blend?

Jerry,
I often notice fruity and even flowery notes with the lighter Monkey roasts
but haven't been able to put a name to them. My favorite is 20 secs into
rolling 2nd with a wow taste on day 3 and a WOW! taste on day 4. So if I'm
able to roast on the Tuesday before...
