Topic: Update on my Adventures With a Faema Due S and his sidekick Super Jolley (3 msgs / 121 lines)
1) From: elaine jarvis
Finally, I am up and running. I mentioned, what seems eons ago, that I
road tripped up to Tacoma and picked up a Single Group Faema Due S.
And I had a Mazzer Super Jolley that I got for just burr replacement.
Well, I had to get a 220 plug wired in with a new breaker, the plug in
had to be rewired to a standard US 20, blah...blah... blah... my
electrician had to abandon me for weeks on end due to the hot weather
and the emergency air condition repairs. I didn't really mind. Not
being able to pull my own shots in 100 degree weather wouldn't kill
me. But someone with their air conditioner on the fritz on the other
hand... It gave me time to study up the manual Rob so kindly mailed me
on my machine. And wouldn't you know it, the Super Jolley went on the
fritz. We took it to Caffeine Machine aka Espresso Machine Experts
(they service the machines for the PDX chain Coffee People) and if you
need a repair shop for pro coffee equipment or hard to find parts, in
the PDX area, contact me and I will give you their email and phone
number. They also can get parts and install them. Anyway, they
discovered the burrs weren't screwed in properly and a few minor parts
were missing. They had me good to go and gave me a short lesson on
working my grinder in 15 minutes. No charge, but asked me to purchase
my next set of burrs from them and my Faema gaskets. Normally, I'd be
on my way to barista ninjadom or espresso nirvana or coffee elysian
fields, but wouldn't you know it- I had a kitchen accident with a
knife! I managed to slice off part of the tip of my left pinkie. I had
to go to emergency because we couldn't stop the bleeding. Got into a
minor fender bender and cracked my windshield. When it rains it pours,
huh? So right now I have a finger guard on my hand and am trying to
not drop and break things. Techinically I'm an amputee, but after
seeing the guys and gals fresh from Iraq at the VA,; I'd be insulted
to have my minor injury compared to some guy who had both legs blown
off by an IED. I've manged to pull a couple of shots. So far nothing
spectacular. My tamping techinque really sucks, but it is difficult
with your pinkie held up like Emily Post. And sampled a few of my
roasts of SM espresso blends. I burnt the Liquid Amber and only have
1/4 pound of monkey left. I'm gassing out several SO, roasted in a
Gene Cafe, so hopefully next week I can try those out.

Dear lord. This is a good time to located your best local coffee shop.
In times of coffee need, I've got a local shop that takes care of me.
It's a good time to roast up some samples and put them in mason jars.
Personally, I'd take the opportunity to train my S.O. It can be a fun
way to pass the healing time.
