Topic: Post Summer Espresso Jam unknown brown paper bag-o-beans... (4 msgs / 87 lines)

As always after hosting a Gathering various bags-o-beans are found here and
there left behind. None get wasted to be sure! (vac sealed and frozen to
keep 'em fresh longer don't you know:-) Anyway, one bag is totally
anonymous. A lined brown paper coffee bag, nada written on it! Nice city
plus to light full city roast of who knows what. Man trying to guess will be
majorly sticking my neck out! Made us after brunch Americanos with it, very
smooth complex balanced cup. Definitely not wild African or earthy
Indonesian or delicate Central predominated here! (dry smell told me that
anyway) Only roasted one batch of the yellow bourbon Brazil so far but me
thinks it's a major component, could this be Mike (just plain's) espresso
blend of 50% Yellow Bourbon, 25% Horse 30, 15% Monsooned Elephant & 10% Aged
Sumatra? Or am I way off base and it's totally something else. Somebody fess
up!-)
Whatever it is from the taste of the just finished Americano I've got to
pull a ristretto of this stuff!

Tell me what you think of the ristretto and I'll give you a hint.

"Blew" the first ristretto attempt. Pulled at 201f and stopped the shot
30sec about 1.25oz, obviously pulled too fast for a really good tight
ristretto. Tasted pretty darn good though regardless, maybe just a tad
bright and not as smooth or sweet as I thought it could be so I sinked it!
(Not that it was even close to a bad shot, but after yesterday wasn't up a
bunch of shots:-) So tightened the grind, followed your advice and pulled a
tad cooler 200f and nailed a simply gorgeous 1oz 42sec ristretto.
Outstanding. Superb. As good as the best yesterday. A Godshot? Naw, I don't
declare them but very rarely and already declared one this year, however a
definite Chorus of Angels shot at the minimum! And in truth not quite sure
how or if it could have been better! Better than ristrettos from my Summer
Jam Blend or Alchemist's Triple Ethiopian blend? Not really, just equally
phenomenally outstanding each in their own slightly different ways:-)
And still a bit surprised such a light roast wants such a relatively low
temp pulled ristretto to really sing...and man does it sing. Such a great
linger as I type.
Now back to continuing post host clean up duties:-)

I pulled a one and a half ounce triple LM basket ristretto of Plain
Mike's brown bag blend this AM at 201 degrees. 8 sec preinfusion with
a 30 second pull. A very very very good blend. Equal to but as Mike
McKoffee said, different than the other blends yesterday. Plain Mike
you have a winner!
