Topic: Exploding Yama (6 msgs / 91 lines)
1) From: Scot Murphy
I seem to remember someone on this list having a Yama that exploded
while brewing with it. This came up because someone (I forget who, so
I beg forgiveness) wanted to use a different filter but had this
experience when using a Cory rod with it. Well, I am here to tell you
it may not have been the Cory rod. I was today using my Yama, same as
always, with an old Hario filter (plastic disk with long hubs coming
from the center--kind of like a bicycle wheel, but the hubs are
elongated--and a spring-and-chain assembly that anchors it). Put
short, it exploded. Well, cracked severely, at least. Nothing
different about today's brew than any other, but while it sat, I
heard a loud POP and then a hiss as water flowed out onto the gas
flames.
Weirdly enough, this is what happened to the original Hario: it just
suddenly cracked with no warning. Luckily I have a Cory, but now I
wonder if that fate awaits it, too. At any rate, it seems the filter
was not the problem, but the pot itself.

Cory should be mre durable - personal opinion, but my Cory's have lasted a
long while.
Don't put a hot upper bowl on a granite counter. Granite wins over Cory -
steals the heat and makes a significant crack in the glass...

Is it a stovetop or did you have the alcohol flame on with it?

Mine was stovetop, with a copper plate to spread the heat...

It was on a stovetop. It didn't come with an alcohol burner.
