Topic: Z&D roaster mods (6 msgs / 147 lines)
1) From: george
I have a querry for the roaster modifiers here on the
list.
I have two Z&D roasters and a Variac. I have seen on the
archives about mods for the Z&D to "brighten" up the
roasts. I have searched the internet for mods for the
Z&D roasters but have only come up with using a variac.
Are there any other mods for this unit.
I also have a Bravi and a GeneCafe roasters, but I still
like to use the Z&D's for Decaf's for my wife as her
quantity requirements do not fit into the Bravi half
pound manditory roasts and the GeneCafe is too hard to
hear the pops in decafs in such a small load.
Also, when using a variac with the Z&D roaster, what is
the preferred/suggested max voltage to use?

Guess the question is what would be goal of any other mods. I don't own and
have never used a Z&D but it seems most any heater mod done on other
roasting appliances could be done on Z&D. Like fixed boosted voltage to
heater and automated profile control via computer (actual or PID etc). Could
maybe also boost the fan voltage during cooling cycle to speed cooling up.
Just a couple ideas off the top of my head...

The Z&D isn't a popper-type roaster, though it does use low-speed airflow to
heat the bean mass. It uses mechanical agitation to mix the beans. The only
change to airflow I have detected is an increase for cooling. Roast control
is via roast time.
Unlike a popper, you reduce the bean mass to get hotter temperatures &
darker roasts. The same motor drives the fan and the agitator so changing
motor speed would change both.

Stock that would be true. Question was posed modding for control of the
roast rather than roaster controlling you.

would change both.

Increasing voltage to motor controlling both auger and fan would increase
cooling even better.
