Topic: warning against oatmeal for cleaning (8 msgs / 142 lines)
1) From: Claus Thøgersen
Hi,
After the big debate on cleaning grinders, and since I cannot get minute
rice, I have just tried oatmeal in my MM E grinder. Well I am not going to
do it again. Oatmeal may be softer´than regular rice, but it is too soft,
so it sticks to the burrs and also stop the grinder from working. Only good
reason to use oatmeal on a MM E is if you wish to disassemble and clean out
the grinder!

Wow, I wonder what else we can try?
Perhaps some pablem, or possibly even uncooked grits, that might work.
now how about dried out beef jerky, thats about the consistancy of
leather, well it came from the same place at least, might chop a few
bean fragments from the depths of the burr chocks.
popcorn would probably be too hard, dried peas might work, or any bean
for that matter. some garbanzo beans to get the garbage gabanging out
of the grinder.
Im sorry to hear that the oat meal caused such a big mess for you to
have to disassemble and clean. Have you tried running some coffee
through it, I bet some coffeebeans might knock the oat meal loose, and
then you can use minute rice in minute quantities to clean it then. The
ground oat meal can then be substituted for the above mentioned pablem.
Coffee flavored too, hey, can't start the kids too early yanno, gittem
hooked while they are young.
Then again you could gently blow it out with HP air.

The last time I cleaned my rinder I used plain white rice, uncooked. Seems
to work just great.

But now you have the nasty oils / flavorings and crap from the junk
beans back into the burrs to taint the flavor of your good coffee?
Might have been better off just leaving the original mess in there, at
least you knew it was good at one time.
So the first cup is a bit ricey, give it to the people you don't like
very much :)

The last time I cleaned my grinder I used oatmeal then ran about 1/2
pound of junk beans thru on french press setting ....seemed to work ok
for me.

Was it instant oatmeal? I have used both oatmeal
(rolled oats) and whole oats with no problem at all.

Hi,
No I just took the raw stuff, and like with rice I have no idea if it is
instant or not, that is it is most likely not!
Why it did not work I do not know, but I have a feeling that both the
cleaning with oatmeal then rice and then disassembly has been good for the
MM, and since I have tried it a few times before it does not take very long.
But I will continue to use rice, since it seem to work ok.
