I'm sorry to bring yet another off-topic to the list, but we have such =
a wide range of list members, I was hoping someone might shed some
light on this for me.
I received some info in the mail (well, actually, I sort of forgot
about the first, very prestigious looking envelope - threw it in the
drawer w/my unpaid bills, LOL) saying that I have been nominated to go =
to China (with the International Scholar Laureate Program Delegation on =
Anthropology & Archaeology)!!
Which leads me to my question - has anyone ever heard of this
organization - and if so, do you know if it is legit? (and if it is,
HOW did I ever get chosen???)
Anyone can, of course, contact me off-list, so we don't stray from the =
subject of coffee (unless, of course, China actually grows coffee,
which I doubt.)
Thanks everyone -
Lynne (who now MUST get back to work... and is thinking that she should =
REALLY buy a lottery ticket today)

Oh, I know that. We have scholarship money available at my school; I
may be eligible. Just was wondering if this is really a decent org. or =
a scam. Going to ask around at my school.

I think going to China would....how do you say....Kick Butt!!
If I just got to SEE the Terra Cotta warriors, let alone work on the dig,
this would truly be my lifes highlight (Idido Mist not withstanding) up
there with going to the the Giza Plateau, Cairo Museum, Memphis (not Elvis',
but been there too). The Coloseum and Senate in Rome, Hagia Sophia in
Istanbul, Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, some really cool places in Romania
and Bulgaria too. The Navy had its perks.
How much would cost you to go to China?

Yes, it would be awesome to go there. But trusting an organization you
don't know to bring you there and back is a different story!

You're better off going as a tourist with an agency like Global
Holidays. Yes, you are rigidly supervised and tightly scheduled and
see only what the gov't wants outsiders to see, but the amenities are
decent (nice hotels with good bathrooms, safe and tasty restaurants)
and you hit all the "must-sees." I went in 1994 (Shanghai, Beijing,
Xi'an, Guilin, Li River cruise, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong) and it was
$3K, plus $2000 extra to fly business class (I had just had knee
surgery and needed to stretch out).
