Hello list members.
I won 1/4 pound of the aged sumatra from Dan Kellgren last week. And wanted to
report on my first impressions of this coffee to y'all. OK so first I need to say I may
have screwed it up from the gate since I have never roasted less than 6 oz in my
HG/BM before. Soooo as I got near 11 minutes without a crack I realized the bean
mass was not hot enough so I upped the heat all the way to 1350 and held the gun as
close as I dared and was rewarded with a rolling second within 2 minutes. So that
out of the way, the first brew was in a FP at ~36 hrs----BODY galore. very earthy.
tasty I liked it alot actually and so did my friend, I brewed it up at his house
I dont have the words to describe flavors well, anyway next brew was today at ~ 80
hrs or so. also FP .I dont know why but I didnt like this one as much. still alot of
body, but now the smell of the beans came through in the flavors also, and I gotta
tell you I really dont care for the smell of these beans green or roasted, YUCK. so I
made another cup about 20 minutes ago and I added milk and sugar here and it
didnt help much, still the smell has come through in the flavor. The crazy thing is
sumatra is one of my favorites, but aged sumatra, like I have read before somehwere,
must be an acquired taste. cause I dont like it too much. Not too sure if the extra age
from the first brew and the 2nd and 3rd brew made the difference or not but the first
brew was great, All the body, no bad flavors or anything. now I dont even like the
smell in the one way bags. OH well. I guess Dan said he also loves sumatra but didnt
like this aged stuff at all. so thanks for letting me try it Dan. I must say when SM gets
some in I will get a pound of it to see if a new crop? aged crop I suppose is any better
  than this was.
  Steve

I had a very smilar experience. Early brews were amazing. I think I
even wrote something to that effect in here.
After a few days (maybe 6 to 8), I opened the bag again and could not
STAND the smell. I even threw out the valve bag it was stored in.
It is the first SM-supplied coffee I probably won't order again. I am
glad I tried it and experienced it. But, I did not acquire the taste
for it.
I may try blending the remaing half-pound with something else.
