Topic: new grinder or old grinder? (2 msgs / 62 lines)
1) From: ooi
I've been using my Starbucks Barista burr grinder for almost 2 years
now,
I think the burrs are not as sharp anymore since I can't get my coffee
fine
enough to choke my machine anymore. So, the question is, can I make it
grind finer by tweaking it, or should I go get a new grinder?

ooi, (?)
Get a new one. It's fun to buy a new toy every now and then!
Is the "Barista" grinder you are referring to the Starbucks version of the Solis
166? If so, then I can tell you that replacing the burrs would be really
difficult. Getting the top one out is easy, but the bottom one is integrated
with the gear box. I had problems with my Solis 166 recently and made the
mistake of removing the bottom gear by pulling it out of the gearbox. I
eventually had to disassemble the entire gear box and put the whole thing back
together piece by piece (ooh..many springs and ball bearings..don't go there!).
Even then it still didn't work properly (problem was actually elsewhere in the
unit). Thank the stars for Kyle at Baratza in Bellevue WA. He sent me an entire
replacement gearbox assembly for free even though my Solis is 8 months out of
warranty.
By the way, many of us have found that regular (monthly) cleanings of the
grinder make a huge difference. In my case, I remove the outer casing, scrub the
two halves of the burr assembly with an old toothbrush, blow out all coffee
debris with compressed air and reassemble. It really makes a big difference.
Good luck--check with the list, here, about what the current popular models are.
I bought my brother a Solis 177 for Xmas last year but I'm entirely certain it's
better than my trusty 166.
Cheers,
Keith
