Hi Lisa, it does sound as if we could have a gathering here in Albany. =
Mike has invited others to coffee tastings in the past, but so far he =
and I are the only ones doing homeroasting and playing with different =
brewers, etc. He's recently added an Elektra espresso machine (from =
Chris Coffee, which is located right here in Albany) to his arsenal and =
between the two of us, we have quite a selection of beans from =
SweetMaria's to roast for comparison. Searching for decent coffee that =
hadn't been char-roasted led Mike to SweetMaria's and their freshroast; =
then to a Technivorm and HotTop and there was no turning back! I chose =
the Z&D for the smoke reducing feature, and I had the advantage of =
having seen, heard and smelled the roast process with the HotTop, so I =
knew what to expect. So far, we've stayed pretty much with varietals =
like the Bolivian Peaberry, the new PNG Peaberry and the Rwanda that do =
best at the City, City+ end of the roasting range. I'll speak with Mike =
and get back to you. Kevin, Andie, others...feel free to chime in. Take =

Not sure if this went thourgh b/c of a message from the moderator but I'll
try again...
I'd be game for a gathering. I brew with a West Bend 4cup with a gold
plated wiremesh cone for daily use at home. I used a thermal probe the
check the water temp and it heats the water to 197F to 199F before dropping
it on the grinds. (I have a Hamilton Beach at work that does the same). I
think drip brewers not coming to temp is primarily a voltage issue and not a
brewer issue. I have a friend who roasts his own and measured the water
temp of his Mr. Coffee to be within the same range (he was 198 to 200F but
that's close enough for government work). I also use a Bodum French Press
and a Bodum Santos (I'm not good at this method).

Kevin, I'll work on setting a date. Mike's primary brewer is a Bodum =
Santos. He's been using a vac pot of one sort or another for years and =
I'm certain he could help you with that brewing method. He also has a =
Technivorm, which his wife Julie prefers. I'm using a Krups MokaBrew and =
of course, I would bring it along. I'll keep you posted, Linda

10) From: Kevin
Linda,
If possible, can we arrange a date in the spring? Less chance of snow and
all... I'd love to see the Bodom Santos in action. I've always had to press
down on the top chamber to ensure the water would rise. I have a feeling I
was using too much heat though. But I have limited time in the morning, so
the clean up of a drip method (dumping basket/filter) is much faster than
with the Bodum.

Will anyone be willing demonstrating the art of espresso at this gathering?
I love espresso but know very little about how to pull a proper shot (or how
to even pull a shot).
