Topic: Does roasting affect caffeine? (4 msgs / 143 lines)

Someone asked me this question and I wasn't sure of the answer. Does how light or dark you roast affect the caffeine content of the bean?

Yes. Sounds counterintuitive, but the darker the roast, the lower the
caffeine content. You'll get more of a buzz out of a shot of City-
roasted Brazil than you will from a shot of Starbucks French,
Italian, or espresso-roast.

Laura,
I've been told that as the roast gets darker, the caffeine content goes down
(within any particular variety, that is).

Yes, Laura-
With no roast or a very light roast you couldn't drink it, so Caffeine =
Zero! It's the bell-shaped curve: Very Light roast no takers of the cup.
Burning the beans is a sick bird offense so they're in jail and of no
consequence to coffee drinkers.
